How do I show my images on this web site
I originally decided to set up the Guest Astronomer area of my web site because Rod Pommier had a wonderful story and some photos of the Solar eclipse from Turkey. I Thought that as long as it was setup for Rod I could allow other astronomers to post some of their photos on my site if they didn't have any other means to display them. It has become apparent that there is more to putting the web pages up then ftping a text file and some jpg files onto the server. I think that this section of the web site has merit and I would like to continue maintaining it.
In order to have your images displayed in the Guest Astronomer area you must follow these steps:
- Send an E-mail to knstars@thegrid.net to let me know that you are interested in showing some pictures. I intend to let a few people show at a time and I will decide what order on a first-come-first-serve basis.
- Make some thumbnails of you images. Keep in mind when creating thumbnail images that most monitors can't see greater then 72ppi. Any ppi(Pixels Per Inch) greater than 72 will only result in a larger file size. Image file size is more important then its display size. There is however a fine line between an image that can be seen and is small enough to download quickly, and one that has a small file size but is too small to see. As a general rule of thumb try to get your images down to 10kb or less; although rules where made to be broken and a 10kb thumbnail that can't be seen is worthless. Thumbnails need to download fast so the people who are looking at your web page wont have to wait a long time for the page to down load.
- Create a single web page with your thumbnails linked to their images and any story or descriptive text. Your images and web page will reside in a single directory on the server so make your thumbnail image source tag and the links to the full image only reference the image its self. If you put any directory names in the href or src attributes they will result in a broken link
<img src="AnyDir/ImageName.gif"> =
<a href = "ImageNameOnly.jpg"> or <img src = "ImageNameOnly.gif"> =
If your html skills are not up to par or you want an easy start here is a
template to help you. GuestTem.zip
3kb Read the ReadMe.txt file for instructions on how to use it.
- Send the web page, all of the images and thumbnails attached in an E-mail or zipped and attached in an E-mail to knstars@thegrid.net.
If you don't know how or know someone who can help you create your web page the company who put my web site together can create one for you for $50.00 send the text and pictures to info@vantagegroup.com they can make the page and thumbnails for you.
